Hello All,

We have database version 8.1.6.0 in my company and power builder 9.0 is running on front end. I need to ugrade my database to 10.2.0.1...I am kind of confused here cuz different document says different thing...

one doc from metalink suggest that i can directly go from 8.1.6 to 9.0.1 and after that i think i can upgrade directly to 10.2.0.1

other 10 upgrade document from otn suggest this

8.1.6 ---> 8.1.7.4----> 10.2.0

but i think in this case i have to install 8.1.7 then apply patchset 8.1.7.4 , please correct me if it is wrong. If it is right then its lengthy process....

please guys help me out in this and give me proper suggestion what should i do...

thanks
abhi

Yes, your procedure is right....already answered by "Ana"

What is your database size if small and you feel it is very lengthly procedure then you can use EXPORT/IMPORT(original utility) and upgrade your database.

export database from 8.1.7 and import to 10g

Taj

Forgot to add in my last post...

what about the other option which is mentioned in metalink
DocID: Note:159657.1, according to this

8.1.6 ---> 9.0.1----> 10.2.0

Is this a bad option?

Thanks
Abhi

note just say upgradation from 8.1.6 to 9.0.1 ...It doesn't mention about anything 8.1.6 to 8.1.7.4... but i wanted to know your suggestion.

Since 8.1.6. to 8.1.7.4 has an extra step of applying patches...

Thanks Michel

The document is "Complete Upgrade Checklist for Manual Upgrades from 8.X / 9.0.1 to Oracle9iR2 (9.2.0)" and does not talk about 10g.
For 10g, keep 10g upgrade manual.

Thank you very much Michel for you quick response...

Yes you are right, i will definitely keep 10g upgrade document. I am just trying to find a best way to do it.

I suppose once i will upgrade 8i to 9i rel1 then i can upgrade it to 10g from 9i rel1. right?

Thanks

And don't confiused.

<quote>
For example, if your current release is release 8.1.6, then you will need to first upgrade to release 8.1.7 using the instructions in Oracle8i Migration for release 8.1.7. The release 8.1.7 database can then be upgraded to the new Oracle Database 10g release using the instructions in this book.

You refer wrong metalink note.

I suppose once i will upgrade 8i to 9i rel1 then i can upgrade it to 10g from 9i rel1. right?

But why ?

from 8.1.6 apply patch 8.1.7 upgrade 10.2.0
---> this is not better option ?

instead of
from 8.1.6 upgrade 9.0.1 upgrade 10.2.0

Regards
Taj

And more when you know that 9.0 was the worst version Oracle ever released.
It is a really bad idea to transit via a buggy version.
